Starbucks in Tokyo

JR Tokyo Eki Shinkansen Minami, , Japan

OPENED: ???, PHOTO: 6/16/2013

Good luck finding this store, one of three inside the JR Tokyo Station. After asking around, you'll discover that it is inside the ticket area. Eventually you'll figure out that you can enter with just a 130-yen ticket, but then you still have to find the store itself. You'll wander round and round, because you don't speak Japanese, but you won't see it, and eventually you'll ask a guard who will look at a map and inform you that the store--the WRONG store--is outside. You'll say "no, inside", and he'll repeat that it's outside. You'll walk off and keep looking, until you spot an information counter. Thankfully the attendant will speak English, and she'll direct you towards the Shinkansen South Transfer Gate, and tell you you need a ticket. Fortunately, the 130-yen ticket you already bought will get you past that gate as well, and finally you'll find the kiosk!!! Funny thing is, if you had been able to read Japanese, and you had seen the store's full name on the Japanese site, JR Tokai Tokyo Eki Shinkansen Minami-Rachinai, you would have had a clue, because eki means station, minami means south, and rachinai mean something like 'within bounds'.

At most of the office building stores in Tokyo, I was able to find an angle for a good photo with no problem, but at this one, security is tight, and a very serious security guard sits just to the right of the store, making it impossible to get an angle. As you can see, I shot this from outside, and he STILL saw me. As I packed up my camera, he came outside, looking at me sternly, and I quickly crossed the street.

At this store I saw something interesting, blankets that customers can use. I'm not sure I quite got it, but the barista showed me that a customer can put the blanket on her lap when sitting. I guess it's for for the cold, but it's not even that cold, especially since this Starbucks is inside, underground.

Stores Not Visited

ATTENTION

Because of a glitch on the Starbucks website, this list is missing an unspecified number of stores that opened after July 1, 2024. Any remote stores that are not near any other stores will be missing, unless I found an article or social media post, and it is possible that other stores are mising also.

Licensed Stores
My Starbucking rule regarding store ownership are complicated and will be explained fully in my as-yet-unpublished book, but here are the basics. If Starbucks has a proper company in a country, such as Starbucks United States or Starbucks United Kingdom, then I only count stores operated, in whole or in part (sometimes there are partnerships) by Starbucks. In these countries, stores operated under license by other companies do not count. In most countries, however, Starbucks operates stores in a joint venture with another company (such as Tata in India) or licenses the brand to a primary (exclusive or semi-exclusive) partner, such as Alsea in Latin America and western Europe or Al-Shaya in the Middle East). In such cases I visit stores operated by those primary licensees, but not stores licensed to secondary licensees such as SSP or HMSHost. Additionally, in the U.K. and France, Starbucks franchises to a small set of companies, and I do not count those stores. Finally, note that some stores listed below might have closed down.
